Bio: My passion for bonsai began at about age 9. I was born in 1959 and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. My dad was a landscape contractor, as I am today. He used to purchase and dig nursery stock from a nursery, Line’s Nursery, down the street from where we lived. Occasionally, I would go with him and was wandering around the nursery one day and found little mugho pines, which the nursery owner had lined out and was training in the ground. I asked the owner, Mr. Line, what he was doing with them and he said that he was training them as bonsai. I began asking him more about them and visited him more often. One day he loaned me two books he owned from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, “Handbook on Bonsai: Special Techniques” and “Handbook on Dwarfed Potted Trees, The Bonsai of Japan” and told me that I would learn more if I read them. He showed me how to start and grow plants from cuttings, how to prune properly and other skills I would practice as I grew older
.

My dad used to bring home shrubs in the back of his truck which were removed from a job and discarded. When I saw an interesting looking trunk or shape I would remove it from the truck and pot it up. Most would die within days, some would survive for at least that years growing season. It was great practice and I learned a lot.

When I married and moved out of my house into a double in 1979 I moved my bonsai there. The neighbor next door noticed that I was a bonsai enthusiast and told me his father-in-law used to do bonsai. He introduced me to his wife and she told me her dad was Walter Line and used to own a nursery. I told her that he was the one that got me started in bonsai and that he had loaned me his two Brooklyn Botanic Garden handbooks more than a decade before. She told me to wait a minute and went into the house. A few minutes later she brought out those very same books and gave them to me. They are now a part of my book collection and I still use them as a reference to this day.

About that same time I discovered a bonsai nursery on the southeast side of Indy called Mendel Gardens. There I began a relationship with the owner, Max Mendel. He sold starter trees, supplies, offered free advice and critiqued my trees when I brought them in. I spent many weekends wandering around his nursery and he taught me much of what I know about bonsai today. I called him the father of bonsai in Indiana. He introduced me to the Indianapolis Bonsai Club, which I joined. I have been a member of that organization since 1979 and am presently the president. Max passed away in the mid 1990’s and I bought a few of his trees and his personal set of Masakuni tools which I treasure.

I worked for a major pharmaceutical company here in Indy for almost 30 years and recently retired and am now a stay at home dad. owned and operated my own landscape business, Fields Landscape Concepts, LLC, which I founded in 1983 and recently closed. I have sold bonsai, pre-bonsai and supplies to club members and fellow enthusiasts since the 80’s and have recently started doing demo’s lectures and workshops specializing in trident maples, Japanese maples, zelkova’s and Chinese elms. I am married, for the second time, with 2 grown children from my first marriage and a granddaughter. My wife Allison delivered twins, a boy and a girl, in November 2007.

With the twins coming along, I was looking for something to do at home rather than being gone every evening landscaping. With some prompting from my wife and IBC club members I decided to start this website and open a new business, named “Bonsai by Fields, LLC”, where I will offer advice, grow, sell and ship bonsai, pre-bonsai and supplies.

More about this Artist: I traveled to Laarne, Belgium in April of 2009 to study with European bonsai master, Danny Use for 2 weeks. I have studied with many masters and artists over the past 41 years. Everyone from John Naka to Bjorn Bjorholm.

Bio:I have been interested in bonsai since my years in college. About 1968, in San Jose, California, I discovered bonsai. I mean the real thing at the Saratoga Shopping mall. I was on a “spin through” with my girl friend* and commented to one of the people sitting at a table how lovely the plants were, especially the flowering azaleas. That was it! Later at Stanford, as a student in the Product Design Program I would go for walks in the Japanese Garden near the Med Quad. Sitting for hours just reading or enjoying the view, I knew that I must be “around”this thing called bonsai. Needless to say, my earlier involvement with Alan Watts and Dr. McCullough, professor of Asian Philosophy at Cal State San Jose had prepared the way for my ‘christening’ in bonsai and just about all things Asian.. It was not until 1970 that I made the commitment. I decided that I would somehow “capture” these plants. Well, I have to say the first big move I made was running into the Four Seasons Bonsai Club at the Pontiac Mall in 1972 (Michigan). That was it! I joined immediately. The club was also in its nascent state. But, I must admit, there was knowledge to be gained by this method. One fellow in particular, John Eicholz took me under his wing and told me about the ‘growing bed’. If you don’t know what it is, ask This important. Having been runner up for the Ben Oki Competition, back in ‘91, I feel a slight kinship to the more professional community. I have won countless first and seconds at the Midwest annual show in Chicago for the last decade. Most recently, I was awarded the MABA award at Chicago in 1996, by David DeGroot for the Formal Upright, Shokan Juniperus Virginianna . In 1998, MABA convention in St.Louis, MO, I received the award for the entire eight state region. I have also been the three time recipient of the MABA award at my own home club, Four Seasons Bonsai Club of Michigan In ‘96 I won the people’s choice at Four Seasons by one, two, three and forth vote. Chosen as on of the four best at ABS in Milwaukee, see ABS Fall, 2002 David Rowe.
I have traveled here in the Mid America Bonsai Alliance region, the US and Canada doing both lectures and demonstrations regarding the art of bonsai. My philosophy regarding bonsai is fine bonsai take time.

Vance Hanna holds a BSID from Cal State San Jose in Industrial design and a BA in Art MA from Stanford University in Product Design

More about this Artist: I have worked with Kimura and Johnny Uchida (CA) during the MABA 2000 symposium in Detroit.
Originally met John Naka and took classes from him in 1972.

Bio: I have been in awe of trees all my life. It was the year 2003 when my interests in the arboreal world took a great turn towards bonsai. I came across a Sunset bonsai book on sale at a local bookstore and purchased it. It all took off from that book. I found myself out in the woods all over my area, collecting different trees to experiment with. I made classic rookie mistakes and extremely regrettably so, but now it seems impossible to kill a tree cause I have learned a bit since then. I am now under the guidance of Mr. Rob MacGregor. I couldnt have had a better teacher than him. My bonsai focus area is all trees within the “Eastern Broadleaf Biome”, which is within where I live. It is known to some as the most endangered biome in the world. I collect suiseki anywhere I go if possible and I also make my own quality Red Oak daizas.

More about this Artist: Anything else anyone would like to know, please email me. I will be glad to hear from fellow bonsai artists around the world.

Bio: Hello! This is My Bonsai Do!

Born in Mirano (VE) July 21, 1982. I live in the province of Venice. Occupation Graphic Designer.

This is my way of bonsai. In 2000 I started my adventure with the Bonsai adventure that led me to become a student of the School of Bonsai Project Future Enrico Savini, Menbro Bonsai Club Piombino Dese (PD), Partner and Employee Ubi. The passion and the constant search for IMPROVEMEN is a stimulus that helps me daily to grow, to deal with friends and enemies, every day I learn something new that helps me in my Bonsai DO. One route that has a beginning but no end, never heard him come because we will not ever come.

I believe in Yamadori in enhancing the essences of Europe since it unique and so diverse that allow the Bonsai collection to have a complex and rich in nuances and unique plants of their kind. An unspoken intrinsic beauty that is just waiting for the moment just to come out.
