He is a self taught bonsai practitioner. He started experimenting with bonsai in 1967 when making ceramics at evening classes in London. The bonsai hobby did not take off until he joined the British Bonsai Association in 1974, which was the turning point of his bonsai career.  He went on to become Chairman of the British Bonsai Association in 1981, and held that post till 1987. He quit his nine to five job in the mid 1980s to start ‘Herons Bonsai’, which is regarded as the UK’s premier bonsai nursery.

Peter is perhaps best known for his stunning Chelsea Flower Show displays for which he has won a record tally of twenty-one Chelsea Gold Medals.
He is regularly featured on British TV in connection with bonsai, and is a very popular speaker and demonstrator at Bonsai clubs.

Peter and his wife Dawn gifted the bonsai collection and Japanese garden to the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley in 1998. This garden has been featured in numerous magazines worldwide.
